Students at St. James School have learned that a little marketing can go a long way in helping their community.

On December 20th Charlotte Traverse’s grade eight class held a holiday sale. The students sold things like Christmas decorations, lip balm, and sketches. This year’s sale was wildly successful and raised $1,450.53 which was donated to Stevenson Memorial Hospital Foundation.

This is the second year Mrs. Traverse has had her grade eights run a holiday sale. The idea is to get the students thinking about helping their community while learning valuable marketing skills. They created posters and had daily announcements. Last year the funds from the sale helped send St. Thomas Aquinas students to Kenya to help build schools.

Each student was expected to present a local charity to their class and explain why they think that particular charity deserved the funds from the sale. The students wished to keep the funds in the community so Stevenson Memorial Hospital Foundation was a great fit. In particular, the “It’s Crystal Clear” Digital Mammography Campaign was chosen because of the positive effects the digital mammography machine will have on cancer screening.

The students worked hard on promoting their sale and it paid off. What makes this donation even more impressive is the size of the school and the grade eight class. There are just over 200 students at St. James School and just 28 in Mrs. Traverse’s grade eight class.

Thank you to the students at St. James School, in particular those students in Mrs. Traverse’s class. It is wonderful to see students getting involved in the community and learning valuable skills.

This original painting, titled Crystal Falls, was created by local artist Susan Menzies.

Susan was inspired to paint Crystal Falls by the “It’s Crystal Clear” the for Stevenson Memorial Hospital Foundation’s Digital Mammography Campaign. What makes this painting even more unique is the fact that the acrylic on canvas piece was painted entirely in public, starting at the South Simcoe Home Show in 2010. Several young artists under the age of ten were able to apply dabs of paint in the trees under Susan’s direction.

The painting was framed by Outi and Kevin Lloyd of Paper Moon. Outi and Kevin have been generous supporters of many fundraising initiatives in the community and this was their final donation before selling their business.

Susan has graciously donated Crystal Falls to the Stevenson Memorial Hospital Foundation for the “It’s Crystal Clear” Digital Mammography Campaign.

The unique painting will be featured in a foundation lottery in the very near future. It can also be purchased outright by contacting the foundation office at 705-435-6281 extension 1263.

This year’s event was held on Wednesday September 28th and once again took place at Drysdale’s Tree Farm. Almost 270 people attended and the event raised $13,000 for the “It’s Crystal Clear” Digital Mammography Campaign. That’s over $3,000 more than last year’s event!

Mark’s Work Wearhouse, Herbert’s Western Wear, and NV Denim supplied the clothing for the show and The Hair Gallery made sure everyone looked great. Lenscrafters in Alliston lent us sunglasses for the show as well.

Food was donated by MMEA Restaurant and Dominos Pizza in Alliston, and Tim Hortons Angus and Borden donated the tea and coffee.

Volunteers from the New Tecumseth, Rosemont, and Adjala-Tosorontio firehalls strutted their stuff to a great show put together by our two amazing choreographers, Beth MacLeod and Chandra Mulder. Keeping all the ladies in line during the evening was our MC, Neil Anthony from KICX 106.

The night was full of surprises – a stuffed moose, a pink tutu, and NV Denim branded underwear all made appearances!

There were a ton of door and raffle prizes to give away and many people walked away with a great item. The winner of the WestJet tickets was ecstatic and is currently deciding where to travel.

Thank you to the three fire halls who donated funds to the “It’s Crystal Clear” Campaign as well as volunteering their time for the event.

Stevenson Memorial Hospital Foundation would like to thank extend their gratitude to all the volunteers who helped make All Fired Up! a success. Susan Rae and Maureen Charles-Drake, co-chairs of the event, deserve a special thank you for the countless hours they dedicated to planning All Fired Up!

We hope to see you all out for this great event next year!
